Natural fibers are harvested from nature

Wool is the most commonly chosen natural fiber, especially since it is the only one used for carpet flooring. It is durable, soft and luxurious, and soil-and-fire resistant. 

Some mills are now combining wool fibers with acrylic ones to decrease the price. Carpet made from silk, jute, coir, seagrass, cotton, and sisal is mainly used for area rugs or mats because they're either too bristly or not durable enough for broadloom.

Synthetics: often seen as the more practical choice

Stain resistance and lower price points make synthetics a popular choice, especially in homes with kids. Synthetics are manufactured and usually contain chemical compounds. Nylon and polyester are the two most popular ones.  

Nylon carpet flooring is known for super strength and resiliency, with the ability to withstand the heaviest foot traffic. When used with a protectant, the stain resistance is superior. Polyester is non-absorbent, so the stain resistance is excellent. It's best for moderately busy rooms.

Olefin (polypropylene) is budget-friendly and often associated with loop construction, such as the Berber. It's durable and non-absorbent. Triexta is known for strength and permanent stain resistance built into the fiber.
